VA Analyses Future Perspectives on EU Education, Youth, and Sport Policy

8 May 2024/Study

EU education, training, youth, and sport policies are undergoing significant transformations and facing various challenges, alongside promising opportunities for future development. Twin digital and green transitions, equity and inclusion, and health and well-being issues are just a few of the challenges affecting all three policy areas. This is not to mention specific challenges such as the shortage of teachers and trainers in education, limited democratic participation among youth, and the challenges faced by professional athletes (e.g., limited availability of dual careers) and grassroots and non-organised sport organizations (e.g., lack of integration into overall sport governance and funding). With the European Parliament elections just around the corner, we are focusing our attention on the potential contributions that new MEPs might make in addressing these challenges and harnessing emerging opportunities.

We are thrilled to announce that our Visionary team with the support of external experts (Dr. Bettina Lange, Dr. Connor O’Carroll, Arthur Le Gall, and Sladjana Petkovic) is working on a study commissioned by the European Parliament (CULT Committee) titled “EU education, youth and sport policy – overview and future perspectives”. The study aims to identify, analyse and provide a comprehensive overview of the status quo and forward-looking insights in the areas of EU education and training, youth and sport policy for the Members of the Culture and Education (CULT) Committee as well as recommendations for the potential ways of addressing the identified future challenges and opportunities.

The methodology of the study includes a literature review, horizon scanning, expert interviews, and three focus group discussions (one per each analysed policy area).

The key target audience of the study is the new CULT Committee members (taking office after the 2024 EP elections), their assistants, and newcomers to the CULT Committee administrative positions. The results of the study will be presented to the CULT Committee members.

The study is expected to be finished by September 2024.
