VA Conducting a Study on the Occupational Safety and Health of Home Care Workers

5 September 2024/Study

Home care workers play a critical role in the healthcare system, providing essential services to individuals who require assistance with daily activities but wish to remain in their homes rather than move to a nursing facility or hospital. These workers offer support to a wide range of clients, including the elderly, people with disabilities, and those recovering from illnesses or surgeries. Their work enables clients to maintain a level of independence while receiving the care they need in a familiar and comfortable environment. While home care workers perform crucial services, their work can come with significant challenges.

Happy to announce that our Visionary team is working on a study commissioned by the EU-OSHA and led by Notus, titled “ Occupational Safety and Health of Home Care workers”.

The study will focus on emerging issues such as digitalization and staff shortages, as well as provide relevant thematic and methodological expertise. To achieve this, the study will carry out data collection and analysis, identify good practices, and conduct consultations with a wide range of stakeholders.

To achieve these objectives, the team will employ a variety of methods, including:

  • Literature Review and Data Collection to gather information from EU-level surveys, academic and grey literature, legal documents, and institutional sources relevant to OSH risks, health outcomes, and preventive interventions in the home care sector.
  • Targeted Stakeholder Consultations to engage with a broad range of stakeholders, including EU and national social partners, NGOs, professional associations, and OSH experts through interviews, surveys, and workshops.
  • Fieldwork and Good Practice Identification to assess existing OSH management practices and interventions, with a focus on workplace-level preventive measures and sectoral/national initiatives, and to develop case studies illustrating successful OSH interventions.

The study will result in recommendations for better managing OSH risks in the home care sector, and will assess the potential for transferring good practices across different contexts.

The project is expected to be finished by July 2025.
