VA Researching Online Job Ad Data for Skills Demand

15 May 2024/Study

Collecting and analysing online job advertisement data is crucial for understanding labour market dynamics and addressing workforce needs. By systematically gathering data from job postings, stakeholders can gain insights into emerging job trends, in-demand skills, and geographic employment patterns. This analysis helps job seekers align their skills with market demands, enhancing their employability. Employers benefit by understanding competitive salary benchmarks and identifying talent shortages, enabling them to strategise recruitment efforts effectively. Policymakers and educational institutions can use these insights to tailor training programs and policies that bridge skill gaps and support economic growth. Overall, this data-driven approach fosters a more responsive and efficient labour market, benefiting the economy and society at large.

Our Visionary team is working on a study commissioned by the University of Milan, funded by CEDEFOP and Eurostat titled “European system for collection and analysis of online job advertisement data”.

The project focuses on advancing and expanding the Data Processing System (DPS), initially established during 2017-2020, to include all countries of the European Statistical System (29 in total), ensuring a seamless and comprehensive data flow for analysis. This system aims to become a key component of the future European Web Intelligence Hub (WIH), facilitating the detailed collection of job-related data (e.g., job titles, sectors, qualifications, type of contract, experience, wages, skills) for analysing skills demand. The contractor is expected to adopt and enhance the existing DPS, incorporating the latest classifications and frameworks (such as ISCO, ESCO, NACE, NUTS, ISCED, along with European and National qualification frameworks) for cross-country and occupation comparison. This includes conducting a landscaping exercise in all covered countries to understand employers’ utilisation of online job advertisements and validate analysis results, thus aiding Cedefop and Eurostat in updating and expanding their knowledge base. The project also entails developing a user-friendly interface for data display and analysis on Cedefop’s web portal and exploring DPS’s potential to integrate additional web data sources, leveraging Eurostat’s IT infrastructure for all tasks. Finally, in the context of the expansion of the system into the future European Web Intelligence Hub, the contractor will be asked to explore the potential of the DPS to cover additional Web data sources, such as enterprises websites, Europass data and CVs.

The roles that VA will fulfil within the project are:

  1. Participating in the validation of the additional classification using the UNI-CEN taxonomy to assess the accuracy of the approach.
  2. Participating in testing and validating the tool related to the identification of New Emerging Skills from online job ads.
  3. Participating in the seminar.

The study is expected to be finished by July 2024.
